Guardian Home & Co-Ownership Program
Guardian Home Program
On occasion, Black Tie Great Danes offers select puppies into carefully chosen guardian homes. This program allows a promising dog to be placed in a committed family environment while remaining part of our breeding program.
Guardian dogs are first and foremost raised and cared for as family companions in their homes. They live full lives as pets, while also being evaluated for their potential contribution to the breed. Throughout development, the dog may travel periodically for shows, evaluations, or breeding-related commitments.
All health testing, breeding, and show-related expenses are fully covered by us as the breeder. For male guardian dogs, once health testing is completed and the dog is used for the first time at stud, guardian families receive a small refund as outlined in their contract. There are clearly defined, written limits regarding how often a dog may be collected or used, as well as a structured plan for when the dog will be neutered.
Placement of females in guardian homes is rare due to the additional risks and time commitment associated with pregnancy and raising a litter. In the event a female is placed, homes are ideally local to allow for proper oversight and support. Guardian families with a female receive compensation per litter—up to the original purchase price of the puppy—or may choose to keep a puppy from one of the litters, as outlined in their agreement. All breeding and whelping are handled by us as the breeder; guardian families are not responsible for whelping or raising litters.
While there is no financial cost to participate in the guardian program, it does require a strong commitment to timely communication, reliability, and cooperation. This ensures that the dog’s health, development, and any program responsibilities are managed appropriately.
Guardian homes are selected carefully and must align with our expectations, as this is a long-term partnership centered on the well-being of the dog and the integrity of our program.
Co-Ownership & Mentorship
Our co-ownership opportunities are designed for individuals who want a more active role in the development, showing, and potential breeding of their dog.
Unlike guardian homes, co-ownership is a collaborative partnership. The owner takes a hands-on role in training, handling, and participating in conformation or performance venues, while also being involved in decisions regarding the dog’s future within the breeding program.
Each co-ownership arrangement is structured individually. It is a fluid, ongoing conversation that takes into account:
- The owner’s personal goals and level of involvement
- The dog’s potential and development
- Alignment with Black Tie Great Danes’ vision and standards
This relationship functions as both a mentorship and partnership, where guidance, education, and shared decision-making are central. While our program goals remain important, we prioritize building a plan that supports the new owner’s ambitions while maintaining the integrity and direction of our breeding program.
