Meet Our Dams
At Black Tie Danes, our dams are the foundation of our breeding program. Each female is intentionally selected and developed with a focus on structural integrity, stable temperament, and long-term health. We are not simply producing litters; we are preserving and improving the breed through thoughtful pairing and responsible stewardship.
Our dams are raised in a home environment and are an active part of daily life. This allows us to accurately evaluate real-world temperament, adaptability, and trainability; traits that are essential for Great Danes placed in family, sport, and companion homes.
We prioritize:
- Temperament: Confident, stable, and environmentally sound
- Structure & Movement: Balanced conformation that supports longevity and function
- Health & Longevity: Strong genetic backgrounds supported by comprehensive health testing
- Trainability & Versatility: Dogs capable of excelling in conformation, performance venues, or as well-adjusted companions
Each dam contributes uniquely to our program, and all pairings are carefully planned with the goal of producing predictable, well-rounded puppies that reflect the Great Dane standard in both form and function.
Minimum Requirements for a Dam in Our Breeding Program
Not every female meets the standard to become part of our breeding program. Before being considered, each potential dam must meet the following minimum criteria:
- Must be fully mature (typically 2 years or older) before any breeding is considered
- Demonstrates physical and mental maturity appropriate for a giant breed
At minimum, all dams must have:
- OFA or equivalent evaluation of hips and elbows
- OFA Cardiac evaluation (echocardiogram)
- OFA Thyroid testing
- OFA Eye Examination
- Additional breed-relevant screenings as recommended for Great Danes
Only dogs with acceptable, breeding-quality results are considered.
- Evaluated against the Great Dane breed standard
- Demonstrates balanced conformation and sound movement
- Free from structural faults that would compromise longevity or function
- Stable, predictable temperament
- Confident without aggression or excessive fear
- Suitable for family environments and adaptable to various settings
- Pedigree evaluated for health, longevity, and consistency
- Pairings selected to complement strengths and improve weaknesses
- Avoidance of doubling on known genetic concerns
- Titles or evaluations in conformation, performance, or temperament-based work are required
- Demonstrated ability to represent the breed standard beyond appearance alone
- Maintained in excellent physical condition
- Proper weight, muscle tone, and general health
- Receives routine veterinary care and high-quality nutrition
Bottom line:
If a female does not meet these standards, she does not enter our breeding program—no exceptions. This ensures that every litter produced under Black Tie Great Danes reflects the quality, integrity, and responsibility we stand behind.
